Wow! It's been intense around here!
I spent most of June putting together our school lessons, a necessity since we started our school year last week. In the midst of that, we were having issues with our well which added a few things to my 'to do' list each day. Thankfully the well is fixed, school has started.......and I'm thrilled with our Daily Notebook system!
I couldn't stop at just the plain and simple. I found some wonderful graphics on Teachers Pay Teachers and promptly began designing a fun set of pages with a sketchy school theme. I even made pages for all my younger children . . . Early Learners, Pre 5, Lower Primary, and Upper Primary! All my kiddos are using these and it is making school so much easier and a lot more fun for us right now!

The Early Learner pages have some basic elements that are repeated every day: name, a letter of the alphabet, a number, a color and a shape.
We started with the letter 'A' and are working one letter per day, upper case and lower case. We'll wend our way through the alphabet like this, and then start over. The second, and subsequent, times around may, or may not be in alphabetical sequence. We'll see.
Even though this three year old is well able to count past ten, recognizing and writing all those numbers is a bit too much at this age, in my opinion, so we will concentrate on numbers one through ten, in numerical and conceptual format only. Learning the number words can wait a year or two.

As you can see from the photos, I have used a dashed line font and printed the words I want my Pumpkin to trace. I give direct supervision to make sure the correct technique is being used, but I used to provide the letter form for reference by writing it myself with a highlighter, or pale colored marker. I like having this font and the ability to print the words. It saves me a lot of time and effort!
For the color, I have the word to be traced, and then a circle and a square to color with a crayon. My logic behind that is . . . those are a couple of quick shapes to put on the page that allow for coloring along straight edges, in corners, and in curved areas as well.
Lastly we come to the shape for the day. I'm not sure how advanced I'll go at this level. For now we're rotating between circle, square, oval, triangle and rectangle. I know a little one this age can recognize and remember more complicated shapes and their names, it's the ability to draw them that I question. Which means, the best way to handle those would be for me to draw them, and have Pumpkin only work on recognizing and naming them. {What a Great Idea! Thanks for helping me with that one! 😊}
You can download a plainer design of the Early Learner Basic Page from this post, or from my freebies page. (see tab at top)
That's it for the first of the Early Learner pages. Next time we'll take a look at Page Two! This is where the fun comes in!
See ya!
